In the past few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI)  has come into common use.  Use of AI in science projects is allowed, but must be acknowledged. The guidelines for using Generative AI must be followed.

There are two types of AI:

  • Traditional AI systems analyze data, recognize patterns, and make decisions based on rules. It learns by repetition. It problem-solves and predicts tasks rather than creating any of its own content.
  • Generative AI systems create their own content, such as Chat GPT. These systems learn by taking in data and creating new content similar to the data it takes in. They create something new.

Whichever you use, you must always reference your source and how you used it in your project.  However, if you used Generative AI (GAI) you must follow the guidelines in the Youth Science Canada Guidelines for using Generative Artificial Intelligence in STEM projects.

Two cautions:

  1. Artificial Intelligence can give inaccurate information and results.  All information and references should be checked.
  2. Failure to acknowledge any source of information or assistance in your project may lead to disqualification from judging. See Rule 7 in Rules and Regulations.
